Vliegveld Waalhaven
Rotterdam Waalhaven Airfield
Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Netherlands, after the national capital Amsterdam. The city’s history goes back to 1270, when a dam was constructed in the Rotte. In 1340, Rotterdam was granted its city rights by William IV, Count of Holland. Rotterdam, which is a major logistic and economic center, is also Europe’s largest seaport.
History
Since 1920, Rotterdam had its own airport: Waalhaven Airport. Waalhaven was a civil airport with scheduled services to London and Paris. The Koolhoven aircraft factory was also located here. On May 10, 1940, Waalhaven Airport was largely destroyed during the German attack on Rotterdam. After the bombing, the Allies completely destroyed the airfield to make it unusable for the Germans. Waalhaven was not rebuilt after the war.
In this imaginary timeline, the airport is rebuild at its previous place becoming an integral part of the port of Rotterdam.
